Goose and Duck hunting in Iceland
Goose hunting in Iceland is a unique hunting experience. Hunting a wild goose in a spectacular and beautiful Icelandic environment is challenging for every hunter.
There are 5 different species of geese in Iceland: Greylag goose, Pink foot goose, Barnacle goose, White fronted goose and Brent goose. Three species can be hunted.
The White fronted and Brent goose are protected.
Goose and duck hunting takes place on some of the best private properties in Þingeyjarsýsla and Eyjafjörður. The hunting areas are variable where we offer both morning and evening hunting, depending on the hunters wishes. The hunters are accompanied by a guide the whole time and he picks the hunting areas and takes care of lining up decoys.
An example of a goose and duck hunting trip from Stöng in Mývatnssveit:
Day 1: Our guests arrive at Stöng after a transfer from Akureyri Airport in the afternoon. Light refreshments and a briefing on the hunting before the first evening goose and duck hunt. After dinner it is time to go to bed since a hunt is planned the next morning.
Day 2: The day begins with an early breakfast before you are transferred to the hunting location with the guide before sunrise. After lunch it is time to relax for a while. The evening goose and duck hunt is followed by a dinner at Stöng.
Day 3: After a morning goose hunt and lunch there is time for relaxation and optional activities such as sea angling, whale watching, a visit to a local bird museum or Mývatn Nature Baths, a geothermal hot spring, at Lake Mývatn, one of Europes greatest natural treasures. Dinner will be served at Stöng in the evening.
Day 4: After an early morning goose hunt it is time to pack and the journey home begins.
Ptarmigan hunting in Iceland
We offer great ptarmigan hunting in one of the best hunting areas in northern Iceland. Ptarmigan (Rock Ptarmigan) hunting is by far the most popular shooting sport in Iceland. The ptarmigan population has been increasing in Iceland and last season (2010) was one of the best in many years.
The hunt.
We offer 5 day trips with 3 days of hunting.
Day 1: In the afternoon you will arrive at Keflavik International Airport. You will then take a domestic flight in Iceland, from Reykjavík to Akureyri. There our guide welcomes you and takes you to our lodge in Stöng, Mývatn.
Day 2: We wake up before sunrise for a good breakfast. The hunting area will depend on the amount of snow in the area. We could be hunting in an area with bush cover, birch bushes or lava. If snow is scarce, we might head up to hills and mountains, there we can use our standing pointers to find the ptarmigan. The dogs we use are German shorthair pointer, English setter and sometimes Labrador to retrieve in birch bushes.
Day 3: Same schedule as for day 2.
Day 4: Same schedule as for days 2 and 3. At the end of the day the journey home begins and you will be transfer to Akureyri Airport.

Artic Fox Hunting
Artic Fox winter hunting is a great and unique hunting experience. They are very intelligent and therefore hard to get. They are also fast runners and can disapears in a moment. The arctic fox is a cunning animal and is also a great hunter. Hunting a hunter is extremely demanding task and specially when the hunt is mostly done in the night-time. The arctic fox is on the prowl over the night, so hunting a white fox in a snowy environment can get a bit tricky. Usually we hunt from opvarming huts with comfortable chairs and bunks and use a meat bait to get the fox to the area. We use both riffels (6,5 x 55)and semi-automat shootguns depending on the circumstances and how long is the distance to the bait.
Standard hunting package: 5 days with 3 days/nights Artic Fox hunting.
Combination package: 6 days with 3 days/nights Artic Fox hunting and two days Seabirds hunting/Sea angling.
Included: Hunting, accommodations during the hunt are in warm and comfortable cottage with all modern amenities. Each hunters has his own room. We provide breakfast and 2 good meals per. day. Guide with a big four wheeler truck. Hunting dogs.
About the Artic Fox
The Arctic Fox lives in some of the most frigid extremes on the planet. Among its adaptation for cold survival are its deep, thick fur, a system of countercurrent heat exchance in the circulation of paws to retain core temperature, and a good supply of body fat. The fox has a low surface area volume ratio, as evidenced by its generally rounded body shape, short muzzle and legs, and short, thick ears. Since less of its surface area is exposed to the Arctic cold, less heat escapes the body. Its furry paws allow it to walk on ice in search of food. The Arctic Fox has such keen hearing that it can precisely locate the position of prey under the snow. When it finds prey, it pounces and punches through the snow to catch its victim. Its fur changes colour with the seasons: in the winter it is white to blend in with snow, while in the summer months it changes to bown.
Puffin hunting in Iceland
Iceland is the home to one of the world's largest colonies of puffins. Over half of the worlds population of the Atlantic Puffin breeds in Iceland. It is estimated that around 3 million pairs breed in Iceland each year thats 6 million puffins, but only 70% of the total are breeding birds. So the total population of puffins in Iceland is between 8 and 10 million birds.
Atlantic puffin ( Lat: Fratercula arctica )
During breeding season, an adult Puffin's bill becomes bright orange and yellow. Atlantic Puffins also have blue on their bills. Their feathers form a rosette at the base of the bill. As winter draws near, the adult will shed the sheath on his bill, exposing a smaller dark bill. The feathers around their eyes molt and are replaced with darker ones. With these seasonal changes, the Puffins appearance changes dramatically. In fact, it was once thought that the Puffins with winter coloring were a different species than the well-known Puffins with their breeding plumage.
During the winter, Puffins often live a solitary life or in small groups, never setting foot on ground but living only at sea. But during spring, as the warm breezes blow, they begin their journey back to their nesting ground, the same one where they were born.
The Atlantic Puffin belongs to the Guillemot bird family. Other species of this bird family that can be hunted along with the Puffins are: Razorbill, Black Guillemot and Common Guillemot.
Hunting season.
Atlantic puffins hunting season is from April 20th to May 10th. All species of Guillemot bird family can be hunted during all season from September 1st until 10th of May.
